Trophies of His Grace

Our Undefilable Purity

Someone once told me about an amazing experience that they had. This person had gone to an inpatient center for a two-week stay. One of the main problems that she was wrestling with was the feeling that she was dirty inside, like discarded trash. The group leader had a pail of dirt in front of her. She poured in water and mixed it together until it became dark brown, slimy mud.  She had each of the people in the group reach into the pail with both hands and smear the mud all over their hands and wrists. “This is how most of you view yourselves,” she explained. “You feel dirty, ruined, ‘yucky’.”

She then went on the explain that one of the main things that Christ has done for us is to cleanse us; to remove the filth that is the result of others’ sins against us, or even the filth of our poor choices. Then the group leader took each person over to the sink at the back of the classroom they were in and had them put their hands under the running water.

As the crystal clear water tumbled down and splashed over each pair of dirty hands, the mud began to wash away. Soon, each pair of hands was spotless and clean with no reminders of the mud. “This is what Jesus does for us.” The leader explained. “He washes the mud off our souls and we get to start over again, clean, fresh, and undefiled.”

Our enemy, the one who tried to destroy us, lies to us and tells us that we can never be pure again, never be whole. But the God of Truth tells us that this is a lie. He tells us to look the deceiver in the face and speak the truth…

I am totally forgiven!

I am clean!

I am starting over again!
